Page 1 of 4 Now that games like Pac Man C.E. and Mega Man 9 stand as admissions from designers that modern games aren't that great, I feel it's the responsibility of gamers like us to step forward and present new ideas that build on classic ones. Like any good gamer, I have my submissions ready!
Influences: Sonic the Hedgehog, that Battletoads level where you ride the unicycle to escape from the Hypno-Orb, Munch Mobile
I've noticed that too many games want me to stop. They want me to slow down and take my time. They tell me to get behind cover and wait for my enemies to stick their heads out. They force me to crawl around on my belly so I won't be seen. They pause the action and put a big "CHALLENGE COMPLETE" sign in front of my face. Well, I don't want to take my time anymore. I want to ride fast, going nowhere, to where I don't care.
So I have this concept where you play as a big treaded wheel, and you roll down a long, branching course that always goes forward, kind of like Outrun. Your goal is simply to get to the end of that course without falling in a chasm or running out of fuel. Fuel can be regained by rolling into pickups like gems or fruit or something. The game will have a Marble Madness aesthetic, with lots of smooth blocky boxes, spikes, and ramps in your way. There will be enemies rolling around and above you, and you'll pull the triggers on your controllers to swing these big cartoon fists to smack 'em good.
Enemies could include enemy wheels that will shove you around like the black cars in Burnout Paradise, birds that try to slow your momentum as you make big jumps, and a big sun-like eye in the sky that doesn't do anything but taunt you and make you wonder how the hell you can reach it.
The game will be about constant motion, with trails of the aforementioned gems or fruit to guide you in the right direction. Even when you clear a checkpoint or beat a tough area, the game won't pause and tell you how great you did, it just keeps going until you win, or you die.
